CD Cover

This image is the inside cover of our album. We have used photos of our main artist.

This image is the first draft of our CD cover, on this panel it contains (from left to right) an inside cover flap, the back track list, and the front cover. Our aim when creating this album was to make our models hair shaped similarly to that of a lotus flower. We did this by laying her against black floor and spreading her hair in certain spiky strands. Once we had taken this shots we used Photoshop to highlight the colours. We used 3 layers, one to make her hair more vibrant and red, one to make her skin and pale so the hair would stand out and one for the green tinge in the floor. We were going to keep the background black but we decided the teal colour worked well with the red hair. We still need to add company logos and barcodes to the album.

Locations Permission

This is the email we sent to request permission to film within the rooms that are owned by the school but looked after by James Walsh.

Back Cover and Inside Cover Ideas of Album.

Although you can't see it from this scan, the back cover and inside cover are black and white. However, we use a design inspired by 'Sin City' and the deep black on this scan is actually a bright red to symbolise the red used in the music video for 'Never Met a Girl'. The red is eye catching against the monotone background making the album stand out along with tying in heavily with the theme of the main music video and single.

Lyrics Annotation

The lyrics of the song are a lot darker than they first appear to be when you first listen to the song. The song is talking about a girl whom the singer is interested in, but interested in because of how different she is to all other girls. The girl seems to have a strong effect on the lead singer which leads to an almost obsessive tone to the song as it appears that he is trying to get her out of his mind. The song also has quite a mystical tone to it due to the older style of the lyrics, especially within the quote from the first verse 'Days of yore' (along with some of the longer words such as 'anaphorically') which gives an old fashioned feel to the song creating a vintage tone.

A Girl Like You - Miles Kane

gif creator online

For our music video, we have specifically focussed on the styles of two seperate bands and one artist. The bands 'The Vaccines' and 'Two Door Cinema Club' are both well known in the Indie Rock music scene, but have different styles completely. The Vaccines are extremely casual and almost scruffy in what they wear to perform, in outfits which include jeans, old jackets, shirts and scruffy shoes. On the other hand, Two Door Cinema club has more of a smart casual look to what they wear, usually wearing smart shirts and either smart trousers, chinos or jeans with some sort of jacket. However, the artist Miles Kane whos cover of 'Girl Like You' we have been looking at, is more similar to Two Door Cinema Club whilst being very different in what he wears. Miles Kane wears very vintage but smart outfits, almost channelling older bands like 'The Beatles'.

For our music video, we spoke about all three of these types of clothing, but decided that we would follow in the footsteps of Two Door Cinema with their smart casual style. We chose this because we feel that it is the most typical style of the genre (other bands also opting to use this style such as 'The Wombats' and 'White Lies') and would therefore fit our video the best.

Final Song Choice

After much discussion and deliberation, we have decided to choose the song 'A Girl Like You'.
As I was researching Two Door Cinema Club, I found one of my favourite artists (Miles Kane) with a cover of an old song. We instantly had lots of ideas and plans for the song which we wanted to put into the music video, more so than the ideas we had for our Two Door Cinema club choices. After a short discussion with our teacher, we decided to change the song because we felt like we could relate to the song more and put our ideas into context with it. The song is upbeat and indie rock, but it has an underlying darkness to it making it a perfect song to create atmosphere with.
The song is heavily based on relationships, instantly giving us inspiration to present a small narrative of a relationship running alongside the live performance aspect of the video (which will be the main aspect), adding a touch of a narrative to break up the constant performance shots.
There has been a lot of inspiration for the video through other videos which we have watched that include live performance and/or lip syncing and a small narrative of relationships. For example;

As the first example, this video by One Direction clearly enhances the chosen lyrics because there is not only lip syncing (and so an element of live performance) but there are shots of girls or either the boys with girls, showing the relationships between them.

Post Break Up Sex by the indie band, The Vaccines is a little more relevant to our video because not only is it in the same genre but unlike the narrative to One Direction, the relationships displayed are a lot darker and are much more gritty. Also, the video has a foggy and slightly dreamlike and sinister feel to it, which is what we aim to achieve for our music video.

Initial Song Choices - Do You Want it All? and Cigarettes in the Theatre, by Two Door Cinema Club

Lyrics - Do You Want it All?

We're low in our hearts
We're low in our heads
But all in good time

Do you want it
Do you want it
Do you want it all?
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/t/two_door_cinema_club/do_you_want_it_all.html ]
We're low in our hearts
We're low in our heads
But all in good time
We'll take charge
We'll all take our chances
All in good times

Do you want it
Do you want it
Do you want it all?

All because you want to be
All because you want to be
All because you want to be
All because you want to be

Lyrics - Cigarettes in the Theatre

It starts in the theatre
A night of encounters
If I hadn't been there
If not for a cigarette

And you could see it change
Look past the blinding light
Look past the blinding light
Just keep talking now
Tell me your favourite things
Tell me your favourite things

Difference in opinion was never an issue
Collect all your questions
Because this time we've all night

And you could see it change
Look past the blinding light
Look past the blinding light
Just keep talking now
Tell me your favourite things
Tell me your favourite things x2

Group Role

My role within the group has been to do the 'mise-en-scene' aspects of the music video.
I have looked closely at the band Two Door Cinema Club (who are our main influences for our music video since we shall be using their song Do You Want it All?) and the way they dress and use props as well as the spaces they choose to create their music video within.
For example, in a majority of the bands videos, they perform in studios with little to no narrative running through. The props they use always are the instruments and their costumes usually consist of either smart casual or just casual.

Monday, 1 October 2012

The mind map above presents the groups initial ideas that we came up with when we discussed what we were going to do for the project. At first we wanted to go with the pop genre, looking at bands and artists such as JLS, One Direction and Adele. However, during further discussions and research we decided to go with indie rock, simply because we felt we had a deeper understanding and better knowledge among us with the type of bands we were looking at. Indie rock has rapidly become one of the most popular genres within young people, even though some people may not know about it still. The group all has different experiences with the genre and different ideas when creating the music video so we feel this type of music will fit us as a group far better.

When we chose to go with indie rock, we spent a long time researching the style, performance, music and videos so we can create a more realistic video that looks professional.

Audience Research

Gender

From my audience research, I have found that a majority of both the males and females enjoy indie music, both genders with overall more people who listen to it over people who don't. This shows that the genre of music appeals to both males and females alike although more females were asked the question. It means that the music video doesn't necessarily have to appeal to one specific gender and can be aimed for everyone to enjoy.

Age

The age range I found most of and who are more likely to listen to indie music are the 16 - 24 year olds. When we come to filming our music video, this should be the age range we target most because there seems to be a bigger interest in indie music for this age range rather than 0 - 15 and 46 - 59.

Do You Listen to Indie Music?

Most people within the younger age ranges all did listen to indie rock, again showing the popularity with younger people and giving us a target audience.

What Do They Wear?

Most of the people asked think indie rock is a very casual style of music when it comes to music videos, showing that when we present our videos, casual clothing may either be a good or band choice because it is sticking with what people know.

How Do You Listen to Music Most?

A majority of people asked listen to music most through itunes, showing us that this may be the best place to present our music video because of the popularity level.

Advertisment Analysis

This advertisment is very literal to the name of the new album. The dark background contrasts with the bright colours of the neon bars which creates the shape of a bible. The light coloured text stands out against the backgroun and makes the advert more appealing to look at as a majority of the newspaper will have a white background with black text. The advert uses very little text to describe the album, allowing the viewer of the poster to think for themselves about what it could mean. The bright colours could also represent a bright and happy feeling to the music of the band against a dark world.

The Biffy Clyro advert seems to be set in reasonably normal surroundings, the kind you would see in everyday life. However, the bats represent darkness and give an eerie effect, but it could also respresent freedom because the bats are flying through the title of the band. It is a very eye catching advert because of the strange qualities to it. The central man on fire could show hatred and heat within the band, representing the band to be firey and exciting. The man with the water exploding on his head could respresent how 'cool' the band are and the way each of them are sat could show an uncaring feeling towards the album.

The Bloc Party advert is very simplistic, creating a dark feeling to the advert because of the black background. The simplisitc, white text makes it stand out against the darkness and adds an element of light and happiness. The moving photo creates a feeling of life moving past you quickly, the viewer barely getting a chance to acknowledge what's going on as it moves past without you realising. The fast movement could also represent the fast beats within the music and how the album sounds.

Record Label Research

Marshall Teller Records

I wanted to look at Marshall Teller Records because they released the first single of one of our chosen bands, 'The Vaccines', with the song 'Wreckin Bar'. The record label was started in 2010 by Leon Diaper and a few of his friends with the idea of creating todays music that we would want on a vinyl record, giving it all an old school music effect. Within two years, the record company has released over 13 records now, making them one of the most watched record labels as the bands signed to them keep producing hit after hit. Along with The Vaccines first single, they also have signed onto the label up and coming bands such as Gross Magic and The History of Apple Pie.

Columbia Records

Columbia records is a huge, if not the biggest, record company. The amount of singers and bands signed is huge, as well as the range of different styles of music; from our genre of indie, through to pop and then onto rap. Formed in 1888, the company began in Washington D.C. in a small apartment building. The bands and people signed to them include Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Aerosmith, The Vaccines, Judy Garland, Journey, The Glee Cast, Barry Manilow, MGMT, Katy Perry, Train and One Direction.

Kitsuné Music

Kitsune was created in 2002 in Paris by Gildas Loaec, Masata Kuroki and the London based design compny Abake. The music label has a particular focus on not only the music, but also the style of the band wanting to combine them seemlessly with whomever they sign. Bands signed to the label include one of the most famous indie bands Two Door Cinema Club, Bloc Party, Logo and Is Tropical.

Analysis of CD covers

The Vaccines first album CD cover, unlike most albums, has no title on the cover and simply has the name of the band above the main colours. The cover contrasts itself hugely with the colours used, while the thick outside border is black, it is constrasted with the pale red and pink colours and the white shirt of the people in the main part of it. A majority of the songs in the album are about relationships between couples, whether they are making up or breaking up, so the couple on the front of the album are very significant to the nature of the bands first album. However, the poisition of the two people makes the relationship seem quite strained due to the way they have put their hands.

Two Door Cinema Club's CD cover is very literal to the name of the song being released. The colours on the cover are all very neutral colours, giving the album quite a calm kind of feel to it, however, the pink accent to the album give it a bit more of a girly, vibrant feel to it, linking into the woman on the cover. The title 'Sleep Alone' links with the woman lying by herself, linking in with the title of the album.

The Wombats album cover is very odd and different to the mainstream CD covers. The group of people on the beach with very casual clothing on a day out. The sheets of paper over their faces show an unwillingness to show themselves for who they are, possibly showing how society hides away from situations they are faced with, which could link with the title 'The Modern Glitch', like a glitch in the modern community. The colours are all bright and vibrant, giving an excitable and happy feel to the album as a whole. The birds in the background give a sense of freedom to the album.

Analysis of Five Videos

The Wombats - 1996

The music video for 1996 by The Wombats is not a typical one, stepping away from the norm of music videos. The costumes are all wetsuits for the actors in the background as the entire video is set underwater. However, the main singer of the band and the other musicians within it, all wear casual clothes, making them stand out against the rest of the people in the background. The two musicians also wear masks and goggles to add to the underwater effect of the video. It is odd because of the fact it is set underwater, however it still links in with the music video because it is in a party like surrounding with the lyrics of the song. The shots are all very slow moving because of the fact it is set underwater.

White Lies - Bigger Than Us

The White Lies, Bigger Than Us music video is extremely different to normal music videos because of the odd narrative running throughout. There is a house being disinfected as a child lays in bed, helpless beside a big chocolate bar. The lip syncing uses the child as the voice of the lead singer for the beginning of the music video, creating a strange and mysterious feel to the music video. The chocolate bar transforms into a young girl who is around the same age of the little boy, clearly showing why the little boy was so distraught over something. The costumes in the music video varies depending on the person. The little boy is wearing a pair of white leggings, possibly showing him to have good intentions and be angelic. The band members themselves are also dressed in bright white colours showing them to be possibly angelic and strong, looking out for the little boy and his friend. The little girl however is dressed up in purple colours, giving her a youthful look to her. The end of the video shows her on a poster in the exact same outfit, possibly showing she is a child celebrity? The whole video could link too the whole aspect of child stars going off the rails and the celebrity culture going on at the moment as the girl could be the cause of the mess of the house. The editing uses quite slow paced cuts and a lot of slow motion to fit in with the tyle of the song, creating a

The Vaccines - All In White

The Vaccines 'All In White' music video is a kind of interpretation of living while your young and having fun, The extreme long shot of the band at the beginning with friends singing and dancing around a campfire shows this. Throughout, mid shots are used often along with long shots, possibly creating a distance from the band and the people involved in the video. The editing is fast paced and cuts on and off beat, making it an amplification style of video, however, a lot of the video changes from colour to black and white, reflecting the title of the song 'All In White', making the band seem modern while the person the song is aimed at seem old fashioned creating a disjointed effect and a contrast between shots. The band all wear casual clothing throughout with a vintage twist, possibly reflecting upon what people used to wear and bringing back older indie music ideas for not only the song but also the video. The locations used change often from clubs to a field  to an old house, again adding to the disjointed effect and making it all seem odd to watch, confusing the viewer as it suddenly switches from different locations in one shot. The narrative has a party theme, but also has a supernatural theme running throughout as the band levitates not only people but also objects, making it seem as if something strange happened at the party.

Two Door Cinema Club - I Can Talk

The music video for 'I Can Talk' by Two Door Cinema club is an odd video, the shots, costumes and setting constantly giving a disillusioned kind of effect, almost like something drug induced, some of the lyrics possibly hinting at this. The editing is all  very fast, cutting both on and off the beat giving an amplification effect to the music video. A lot of the movements throughout make the camera seem as if it is handheld, making the viewer feel as if they are involved with what is going on when watching the video, like its your vision and not a video. The lighting changes constantly during and between shots, sometimes being bright, sometimes spotlighting certain people and it uses a strobe effect a lot, adding to the disillusioned effect and making the video feel crazy and almost like it is messing with your vision so it is hard to fully engage with. The camera shots involve a lot of big close ups and tracks but seem to constantly be changing around, making it very surreal and disjointed. The costumes are also constantly being changed as throughout the video, people are always taking off and putting on new items of clothing making it difficult to see what the band is wearing. However, in the shots where they are playing their instruments, we see them in scruffy suits, making them seem like they are in smart casual. The setting of the video seems to be like some sort of house, possibly showing a narrative that they are at a house party. Although the surroundings are very average and everyday, the way it has been shot makes it seem very dreamlike and crazy.

Vampire Weekend - Giving Up The Gun'

The Vampire Weekend video for 'Giving up the Gun' is a different style of indie music video because it is based around sport. The video also uses famous celebritites adding to the viewers of the song because of the star power used within, adding their fanbase to Vampire Weekend's one. The video uses a lot of slow motion effects because of the sporting ideas used throughout, slowing the video down to allow the viewer of the video to watch the facial expressions and movement of the athletes. The cinematography uses a lot of tracking and long shots to show the actors within the video moving around in time with the music even though it may be out of time, creating an amplification style of editing to the video. The costumes are mainly reds, blacks and whites for the band and the main character of the video, keeping the continuity of colours going and highlighting the change of characters because of the constant change of colours within the outfits. The location the video is shot in is a white studio which is not the typical location for a tennis match considering the match is usually on green grass. This could show the match to be in some sort of dream and the fact that it is unrealistic. The band is only in the video for a short while but they remain to be lip syncing and referring the match, making it untypical of the genre because the band and song is not the main focus of the song.

Mood Board

The mood board displays the look of all three of the bands we have chosen. The bands all seem to have reasonably similar looks, possibly giving them all a very same-ish feel to some people who prefer bands or artists that stand out. The bands all seem to have very cool and almost bored facial expressions, giving them a odd and different look to artists like Katy Perry or One Direction whos looks are all bright and colourful with excitement clear on their faces, possibly showing the people who buy the record would be younger people and most probably females. The clothing The Wombats and Two Door Cinema Club wear are a smart casual, not being too much to be over dressed, but making them look a bit smarter than The Vaccines who are purely casual, wearng things like denim jackets and ripped jeans, giving them an almost lazy look, even when they are performing. In our music video, we will most probably have a smart casual look like Two Door Cinema Club and The Wombats because it looks like there has been more of an effort made and it links with the slightly happier and more dance like tones to their styles of music compared to the darker, moodier feel of The Vaccines music with the lead singers husky tone and the harder guitar solos.

Carol Vernallis - The Kindest Cut
Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce - Telephone

The music video for 'Telephone' by Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce has a very strong narrative running through the entire video, although at points the song is stopped for the narrative or there is a sudden dance break or cut to a new location, this shows discontinuity within the video.

Theory Post 2

Illustration:
Illustrative music videos are the very typical, simple, normal type of videos. These videos are the type you see most often in videos. It edits to the beat of the music and will be a lot of shots of the artist or band performing the song or being a main part of the narrative within.

Amplification:
The purpose of an amplification music video is for the director to amplify the lyrics of the song. The director of the music video will use the lyrics to create a further meaning of the song. Typically, these videos cut on and off the beat. When it does cut off the beat, its used to amplify the meaning of the lyrics with the video which usually has some sort of running narrative within it.

Disjuncture:
Disjuncture music videos are usually a big risk for artists to take with their music. The video does not match the lyrics and is usually something completely different. Artists will often use music videos like this when they are well established and able to take a risk.

Pop Music Video Analysis - Wings, Little Mix

The music video for 'Wings' by pop group Little Mix, is pretty stereotypical of a pop music video. The entire video has no basic plotline or storyline. The cinematography includes a lot of close ups and extreme close ups of the girls whilst singing and dancing. The close ups show their facial expressions clearly, the girls are smiling and having fun making the viewer want to have fun with them. There is also a lot of use of long shots. These shots show the girls altogether dancing around and laughing along with each other whilst they perform the song, so this could bring viewers to have more of a personal connection because of the fact the video is    completely their personalities with no storyline or characterisation.
The high key lighting and colours within the music video is all very bright and cheerful, using  colours that pop out and match each of the girl's personalities. Even when the background is slightly darker, the accessories within the shot are loud and florescent to stand out against it. The colours are mainly girly shades, insinuating that the video is mainly for girls of all ages to watch. The outfits used are all representing the girls individual personal styles but keeping the bright, cute and young tone to the video. Because they have two changes of clothes and there is no characterisation, the audience is again given the look into each of the girls personalities, again bringing them closer to the band and giving the connection between them.
The individual styles of the girls also brings audiences through the girls who will watch the video and either look up to them because of their style of clothing or relate to them because they like and wear the same sort of clothing. The locations used are also very normal within the video. The video seems to be in a warehouse type of surroundings using small separate rooms with backdrops for the individual personal areas.

Rock Music Video Analysis - Welcome to the Black Parade, My Chemical Romance

The music video for 'Welcome to the Black Parade', by My Chemical Romance, has a very apparent narrative, that could however, be interpreted in different ways by various viewers of the video. It is set during World War Two but is a very surreal idea of what someone's descent into the afterlife would be. The song is based around the dying man who goes to see the marching band perform, as the lyrics suggest he did as a young child, who happen to be the actual members of My Chemical Romance, and the experience he has returning back to it.
The video uses a wide range of shots throughout, especially when it moves from the slow cuts into the fast paced ones. The most popular shots seem to be long shots, extreme long shots and close ups.
The video is heavily edited to create the vintage, old look that is needed because of the World War Two period it is set in, however, the modern twist to the film is still evident because of the way it switches between the different types of times. When the band is being filmed, it looks to be more modern than when the man or any participents of the black parade; the smokey, old fashioned photo like outside to the frame adds this vintage feel to it.
The sound is non diegetic throughout aside from a few added effects such as bomb sounds and the TV in the hospital scene at the beginning when the lead singer is singing to the dying man.
The lighting used throughout is artificial, made to look naturalistic. The location stays within the black parade all the way through, even in the opening of the song, the hospital room turns out to just be curtains that fall and shows the man in the black parade already. The black parade looks like it is based in a warzone in London during World War Two because of the smokey, dark and dingy surroundings where there are buildings that have been bombed and are collapsed all around and fires raging. The costumes are very naturalistic in the hospital scene with the man in a white hospital gown and the nurses in typical uniform. However, once we are introduced to the black parade, the band members are in what seems to be a dark uniform of some sort of guard, suggesting that they are almost the 'gatekeepers' to the black parade. Also, the other members are all wearing masks and flamboyant but old and dirty looking costumes such as tulle skirts, ballgowns and big jackets, again reinforcing the surreal and dreamlike side to the video.
The video ends with the lead singer of the band, Gerard Way, presenting the dead man with a medal which could suggest he has either done well for surviving for so long or for his life in general. However, the actual meaning of the video is that someone is dying of cancer and the black parade is the place where you go when you die, but the music video is open to interpretation by anyone which I think can make it either very personal or very distant depending on the viewer who is watching.
The video is typical of the rock genre because it has a very direct and personal feel to it, along with the dark colours used and the sad plotline. The main singer is also typical to the genre because he shows his passion throughout the song through not only his singing but also his facial expressions.

Rock Music Video Analysis - Wake Me Up When September Ends, Greenday

The music video for 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' by the rock band Greenday, carries an almost short film feel to the video because the majority of the video is based on the narrative.
The video is based on a couple who are very much in love and do everything together, however, the boyfriend is enlisted to become a soldier and so most of the video focusses on their lives apart from each other and how she deals with her grief and concern for him and how he deals with being at war and the horrors he faces on a daily basis.
The video uses the famous actors Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell who would attract a new audience to the Greenday songs because of their fanbase. It could also be seen as an anthem for the people who went to battle and are risking their lives or the families waiting for their safe return home also giving a new audience.
The video uses a wide range of shots throughout. However, a majority of them seem to be close ups of not only the characters but also the band memebers. Because of the dramatic side of it, the shots come quickly, as the video is edited to be fast paced with effects such as slow motion, showing clips of tilts, tracks, extreme close ups among others.
There is a lot of diegetic sound involved in the music video as we are given dialogue and sound effects for the story to take effect. The first one minute and forty two seconds of the video has no music and is just dialogue and natural sound effects caused by the wind and the movement of the two actors. Even when the non diegetic music is introduced, sometimes it will fade into the background because the sound effects seem to be one of the most important things within the sound of the video.
The locations vary a lot throughout the video, ranging from a humble family home, to a field to a warzone in what appears to be a middle eastern country. The range of locations show how near and then how far the couple is from each other, showing the good times and the bad in their relationship. However, when the band is introduced, they are in a studio for the entire piece, singing to the camera which could be seen as them performing to the couple or people like the couple because it is so direct and personal to some viewers.

The lighting seems to be natural in the outdoor scenes of the music video whereas the inside scenes, including when the band is performing, seems to be more artificial lighting.
The costumes for the band is very dark clothing, giving them a somber and dark look to them, whereas the couple have very light coloured clothing on in the scenes when they are happy, showing the radiating bliss between them. However, when they are separate, the clothes are darker and look to be more dingy. Also in the scenes when the boyfriend is fighting, he is wearing the typical army uniform which again shows his career to the audience
The video is quite a typical rock video because of the sad and dramatic narrative which fits in perfectly with the feel of the song. The dark colours in the video and dingy surroundings as the video continues is very typical of a rock video.

Rock Video Analysis - If You Wanna, The Vaccines

Rock/indie music video for the song 'If You Wanna' by The Vaccines is a montage style of video with no story line or narrative.
The whole music video is based in a studio with a bright screen behind the band which changes colours often throughout the entire song. The lighting is all coloured as the band moves around the restrictive stage area. A lot of the music video is spent in an extreme long shot, fitting the whole band in as they perform the song giving a concert like feel to the video. The colours of the lighting on the screen create silhouettes of the performance giving a slightly mysterious and exciting effect to the viewers whom are unable to see their faces.
There are a range of shots used, but specifically the extreme long shots and close ups are used most, giving the viewer a personal view of them, but also being so far away distances them and creates a fastival/concert like effect. They also use extreme close ups and mid shots to display the band playing their instruments.
We only get small glimpses of what the band is wearing because the shots are so fast paced and the lighting makes it difficult to fully see them. However, in the short moments we do get to see what they are wearing, it is very casual and normal with nothing out of the ordinary to make them stand out, however, being the only people in the music video means that they wouldn't have to anyway because the audiences focus is constantly on them.
The band performances are quite calm and cool to watch as they create a distance through the lack of direct views into the camera.
Throughout the video, there is only non-diegetic sound as there are only the shots of them playing the instruments and nothing else.
This music video fits in with the rock genre because it is just like a performance of the song like a concert or a festival, making the viewer seem like they are part of it. It has no narrative or story line and therefore is playing the song for what it is and for people to enjoy.

Analysis of Pop Video - One Thing, One Direction

The pop music video, 'One Thing' by One Direction, is a montage style music video with a basic narrative. The narrative is that the group of boys are going around London for the day on one of the famous red buses meeting people and singing for them from morning straight into the night.
The music video uses a range of shot types to present the video. These include long shots, close ups, mid shots, extreme long shorts and extreme close ups to name just a few. They use a lot of hand held shots to make the viewer almost feel like they are moving with the band creating a personal feel to the video. A majority of the music video is also spent looking straight into the camera, again adding to the direct address style to it.
The locations used in the music video are famous London landmarks giving a sense of adventure to viewers in foreign countries and a sense of familiarity to people living in the country and showing them how much they can enjoy staying near home. The costumes for the boys stay the same throughout, showing the continuity of the day in which they filmed. The clothes are smart casual giving them a look that is not only fun but formal, appealing to a wide range in audience.
The performance from the band members is excellent. They are constantly messing around and grinning in shots, making the viewers have fun with them as they watch it.
The sound is continuous with only the non-diegetic music playing meaning there is no excess sound such as the guys talking or the girls involved screaming.

Analysis of Pop Video

The video I looked at was 'The One That Got Away', by the artist Katy Perry.
The video uses a variety of shot types including extreme long shots, over the shoulder shots, close ups, mid shots, tilts, tracks and extreme close ups among others.
The narrative is that a young girl and her boyfriend are deeply in love and living together. They are both artists with what seems to be fiery attitudes causing arguments and fights often. However, when her boyfriend dies, she is left heartbroken and distraught. After there is a time jump to the future, Katy is a sad old woman who has remarried and had a successful career and life, but is still upset over the man she lost and after all these years is still devastated by his loss.
The costumes are very divided. When Katy is playing a young girl, they are all very casual, the kind of thing you would lay around in at home. They are loose fitting clothes that allow movement and give off a kind of 'lazy' feel. However, when the video moves to the present time, Katy is in a very tight fitting and smart looking pencil skirt and jacket, no longer giving off a carefree attitude but showing a hard working business type of woman.
The lighting within the video switches between high key and low key lighting.
